House Committee Approves Heating Oil Funding

The House Appropriations Committee on Tuesday agreed to include funding to help families with heating cots as part of a spending measure that will be considered later this week to allow the government to keep running until the end of the year.
The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program benefits more than 200,000 Bay State families.
“With above-normal snowfall forecast this coming winter for Massachusetts and New England, and costs for home heating oil expected to remain at high levels across America this winter, this allocation of LIHEAP funding is a prudent step,” said Representative Edward Markey.

Earlier this year, Markey and other members of the Massachusetts delegation joined in urging the White House to provide $4.7 billion in LIHEAP funding, the same amount allocated to the program in 2011.
Funding for the program has steadily declined from $5.1 billion in 2009, with the president proposing $3.5 billion for the next fiscal year.
The funding is included in the continuing appropriations bill that is expected to be considered by the House on Thursday. Markey’s office said the bill did not specify an amount but would allow states to draw on allocations similar to that of last year.
